Top-end sound for your favourate tunes and movies

Having recently upgraded my PC I wanted some separate speakers to boost the impact of watching DVDs and listening to music.

Most of the PC speakers I initially researched appeared cheap and low-powered but after some further searching it came down to these from Sony or some Bose or Creative speakers.

Having chosen the Sonys I can thoroughly recommend them to anyone wanting some serious speakers for their PC. While they're inevitably not as good as hi-fi separates, the power and clarity these speakers offer compared to most portable speakers is impressive. 25 watts per speaker gives scope to listen to your favourite tunes and movies with serious impact.

So what's the downside? Well they're big speakers (about 13 inches high) and the volume knob feels a little bit cheap and plastic. Also the power lead is pretty short.

Nevertheless I'd thoroughly recommend these to anyone wanting to seriously enjoy music and movies on their PC.

Disappointed

As a woman living alone, I bought this, and was so pleased with myself that I put it together and got it to work - however, there is less than 5 feet of wire to the speakers - which meant the unit and speakers would have to sit virtually shoulder to shoulder - I wanted one either side of the hearth - and approx 2 feet above the floor - so would need at least 10 feet of wire. (allowing for a 2 foot drop to the carpet, then running under it, then up 2 feet to the shelf the other side.

Regrettably - it is waiting to go back. A friend offered to extend the leads, but I'm not sure how competent they were, and I gather I would invalidate my warranty if I did that.

Probably excellent if you are au fait with electrics. - I'm not!

This product performs & looks just as you would expect from Sony! The sound quality is excellent & it is definitely worth the price!

CANT HEAR THE WIFE NOW--ITS-GREAT

WOW What a fantastic piece of kit--Came with full English instructions.Not totally wireless as I expected rear surround sound speakers are joined by a single speaker wire and has its own power supply.The first film I tested was Star Wars(first one from the late 70s)The whole room vibrated when up high (but not full power) the wife came in 'turn that down' It was bliss couldnt hear a word she said until she turned down.Easy to set up the wires are colour coded instructions are ok to follow. My 10 year old son loves it.Would recommend it

why oh why?

First impressions are that this is a great little alarm clock with lots of features - 20 radio pre-sets, 2 alarm types, snooze function, nap timer... however there are a few pitfalls.

Ever fancies a 45min nap in the afternoon? You can't have one as the nap function jumps from 30 to 60mins.. they really should have provided a function to set your own nap length.

Perhaps the most annoying feature on this alarm clock however is the backlight. If you're finding it hard to get to sleep at night, even on the lowest setting, the backlight shines brightly in a dark room.

If these problems don't bother you however, this is a fairly smart, compact alarm clock... just a couple of improvements however would make a world of difference.

Great value, easy to use, real plastic.

Being a thirty something I was there at the start of MD and was one of the first to buy. I have since bought more recent MD machines and MP3 players. (I am a slave to gadgets!) Minidisc never really seemed to cut it against their iPod rivals but finally these machines seem to have cracked it. Each Hi-MD holding 1Gb of music or data they make for a much more cost effective and flexible player as opposed to their expensive and restrictive MP3 rivals. The software is extremely intuative and the tranfer time is fast. My only complaint is that my early machines were brushed aluminium and felt good quality whereas this unit looks and feels the plastic that it is. Overall a great buy, especially at the price Amazon are selling them.

For the price, it’s"almost" perfect!

I was in desperate need of a Micro System for my bedroom. I’d auditioned a few over the weeks, you can only really tell what s system sounds like, when it’s in your own space (a certain stores 16 day Guarantee comes in handy for this!). I kept having the same problems though, the hifis I REALLY liked where those which cost more than I’d planned on spending; the ones within my budget, either sounded poor or lacked the features I wanted.

Today I discovered this little beauty. I’d previously dismissed it, as I’d tried it’s newer brother, the Sony CMTNEZ3, which I found to be cheaply made and lacking any bass response. I was a little dubious about my purchase, but could always return it if not totally happy (again, that certain stores 16 day guarantee!).

Upon unpackaging, the first thing I noticed was the weight of both the speakers and main unit. It’s a lot more solid feeling than it’s newer version. I connected the speakers and put a CD on to play, to check out the sound quality, before setting the system up properly.

OK, don’t expect the kind of bass levels you’re going to get from a much larger mini-hifi, or sub-woofer. The bass produced by the two small speakers, is impressive though, especially considering the cabinets only house one 4" Full Range Driver. The sound quality is quite rich, with a clear treble and decent amount of midrange. The bass and treble can both be adjusted"+ & - 3 digits". There’s a Bass Boost (DSGX) which does give a more powerful (although not necessarily more bassy) sound too.

The output power, whilst not huge at 15 watts per channel (RMS), is also quite impressive. With careful speaker positioning (ideally 1.5 metres high on shelves), I’d say this stereo would be suitable to fill the average sized living room with enough volume for a party!

I also like the fact it has an AUX input, which means you connect your DVD/MP3/PC ect. This is a rare feature on a most hifi under £80. The cassette deck, although most people rarely use them these days, is electronic, rather than one you have to push buttons down on, again, a rareity on a budget end stereo.

My only gripes are lack of MP3 CD playback (it’s newer version does have this feature, but as I said, I found the sound quality to be poor compared to this model) and lack of RDS on the tuner (I’m used to seeing the station name displayed). The remote control is easy to understand and feature packed. You can change the bass/treble from the remote aswell as on the main unit. So often these days, it’s only on the remote you can change the EQ controls, a bit of a nightmare if the remote gets lost or broken.

So to conclude, for the price (I paid £65 at that well know high street catalogue store), this is one of the best Micro Systems available. Sound quality is suprisingly rich and powerful, and styling is tasteful and of good quality.
