Sony DVPFX720W -- 7" portable DVD player: FAB!

I ordered this as a replacement as our previous Toshiba model failed within the 12 month warranty. Being competively priced on Amazon, this Sony model is a wee beauty. Build quality is second to none as you would expect from Sony. The 5 hour battery fits neatly underneath the unit base [unlike other DVD players] and will keep our kids entertained on car or long haul flights. Picture quality is great in all directions, although the speakers are a bit weak on output. Overall, a great portable DVD player.

The best product of its type.

For two years I have put up with appalling sound quality whilst listening to my MP3 player in my car through a Belkin MP3 cassette adapter. My 4 year old Iriver IHP40 MP3 player is great (if now somewhat old fashioned by modern standards it still beats any Apple iPod hands down) and my Bose sound system in my Audi A3 is unbeatble but with no MP3 player socket (and no desire to try a notoriously unreliable FM receiver) I had to go and spoil the whole thing with a cheap Belkin device. The sound quality was just dreadful with a constant tape hum, variable volume, hiss and loss of bass.

But now all this has changed since I discovered the Sony cassette adapter. The quality is as excellent as it is ever possible to get for a tape device and definitely better than an original cassette tape. There is no discernible tape hum or noise and not only is my music so much clearer, sharper and with a full range of tones but I can also now listen to downloaded Podcasts of programmes predominatly in the spoken word - something that was close to unworkable with the Belkin. Previously, the best quality music on my car stereo was through CDs. Now the MP3 player through the Sony cassette adapter is as good. If you need a device like this buy the Sony. It is unbeatable and without question worth the extra money.

Does what it says on the tin

I wanted a bed-side table size CD/radio/tape player. This one does the job really well, without looking bulky or ugly. The sound quality is very good - my spoken word BBC version of the Hobbit sounded really vibrant. Recommended.

Best you can buy for this sort of money...

Fantastic, clear sound, very responsive with lovely deep bass tones which for the type of music I listen to (classic rock) has made my sub totally obsolete and freed up a lot of boot space!

I dare say there are better 6X9s on the market, but certainly not for this sort of money.
Closest I got to these on the high street was the 280w versions of the same speakers, which were £44.99 and £49.99 at Motorworld and Halfords respectively! can't even find them this cheap seccond hand!!

Having had JVC, Kenwood and SPLx 6x9s in the same price range previously, I have to say these just blow them away, can't recommend them enough!

Great

This player is great, it looks and sounds good and is very easy to use (I didn't even have trouble tuning in the radio preset station thing).

I also had difficulty installing, but not because of instructions, quite simply the leads on my Nissan didn't match the connection that was on the player, so for about 6 pounds I brought the adapter and it was fine.

This is teh bets one Ive seen for this price, its excellent

Sony CDX-DAB6650

I have just fitted this radio, the installation was easy ,both the wiring and internal antenna. The dab reception is fantastic and even worked for a while in a multi storey car park , on leaving the car park it regained the signal as quick as FM .Sound and volume are good. Mp3 player works fine and scrolls titles as well.I don`t have any issues with the buttons , you just have to get used to them as with any new gadget.
I connected my tom tom with the auxiliary cable(supplied)and it too works.overall ,Im well happy

Fails shortly after purchase

Had 3 of these (2 replaced because they kept failing).
I was using static in a cradle with the headphones connected in the bottom. And the sound for the headphones would only work for about 1-2 weeks before cutting out to about 1 channel and then nothing at all.
I didn't even move the connector in this time. The charger still worked but the audio connection failed. (3 times)!

Nice Gadget to keep kids happy at the back while driving

We enjoyed this player a lot. The pictures are very nice on the 7" screen. The only complain is that the player is region 2 only.

The speakers are not going to blow you apart but they do the job for £20 a go (u cant complain). Relatively straightforward to hook up and they have improved my car's sound (tight renault didnt put in rear speakers).

great unit from sony

in short, this is a great unit due to easy installation and operation, very powerful sound (even with unamped speakers), brilliant usb feature (works well with my sony NW-E016 walkman, as well as simple flash memory drives), ease of use (sony systems always have simple controls and menus),pretty cool styling, good value for money, useful 7 preset equaliser settings, and remote control (why not?! useful if youre working on your car). great peice of kit in my opinion, especially if you dont intend to amp your speaker as it delivers a very powerful sound (if your speakers are any good).

An excellent replacement for you stock stereo!

I got one of these on fleabay for a tad over £90 and it is dead easy to fit, even a Halfords muppet can do it. We replaced the Peugeot 106 stock unit, absolutely cra*!, (but suprisingly good sound quality) , with this unit only needing a ISO loom connector from autoleads. The microphone is just behind the panel so you dont have to run a microphone behind the dash and the headlining.

Bluetooth: - When first fired up, it is easy to pair to a bluetooth phone. We have an array of Nokias in the family and the wife's one is a 6111. This paired instantly and up and running in no time. It appears in the paired device as 'xplod' and off you go. It will pair up to more than one phone, and it will do it instantly as soon as you turn the stereo on, good news there. The main issue is that if you finish using one phone , then get in the car with another phone , you have to connect the new phone , despite it all ready being paired. A slight annoyance, and very minor. The best feature by far is that the unit uses A2DP. This allows you to play music from your phone over bluetooth in CD quality stereo. Not all phones can do this , but some can with firmware updates. The quality in call (and ours is a diesel, so very noisy) is very impressive considering it isnt a noise cancelling microphone, or directed right at head height.

CD/MP3/WMA: - Havent done WMA tracks yet, but MP3 sound quality is awesome, for a budget unit, and it has various equalizer settings and also custom that lets you set bass/treble. I used a Steely Dan album (Gaucho) to test with and my mate said that"they couldn't have been stock speakers" in the little 106. No problems at all and Sony doing their usual greatness.

Display: - Can be very bright, especially on dark country roads at night, and difficult to see when the track ID is scrolling, this can be turned off though.

All in all a superb bit of kit. Only a pedant would give it 4 stars, but you have to look at the price.

My only gripes, and to be fair, they are only minor and I should have bought the vastly more expensive one BT5000 if this really mattered, is the lack of pre-outs for amplifiers etc, or IPOD input etc. It does have a 3.5mm jack AUX input , but frankly if they update this model it should be a USB job next time. This is only a budget stereo and the missus loves it.

I like it so much for the money , my Volvo 850 estate is due one at Christmas, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it, and believe me I spent a lot of time looking for a good quality stereo that does everything.

Safe, stylish, easy to use

This is a really great handsfree device. We've had others but they are always difficult to hear the person on the other end with as you seem to hear the road and engine more than anything.

This is TOTALLY different. You can easily hear the person in the car - they sound like they're talking on the phone without the car running. The fact that you can have lots of phones paired with it. This is really great if you have a work phone and personal phone (as I do) and then another personal phone (my husband).

I cannot recommend it highly enough and it was much cheaper on Amazon than anywhere else.

Great buy

I bought (and installed this myself) purely based on the reviews and advice posted here. I did initially want a stereo which had direct iPod control on the faceplate, but they were a bit more expensive. Got drawn to this one because of its high rating with reviewers and great price.

Having never fitted a car stereo before, I thought it would be difficult, but it was really simple and quick - done in a few minutes. Spent far more time trying to get the old Pioneer MD player out of my Honda Civic - had no idea where the release keys were, so had to improvise. I didn't want to spend more on new Pioneer stereo release keys that would be useless after I had removed the old stereo.

I can plug my iPod through the USB port and skip through albums and songs using the buttons on the faceplate - don't think I can access my playlists - though haven't tried yet. It starts playing a random song when it is switch it on. Apparently you can fully control your music via the iPod's (or other MP3 player) controls if you plug into the front aux input - but this involves buying an extra cable. May not be so good to try and combine driving and trying to read the tiny display on an iPod nano. The sound quality is great, at least to me - anyway much better than listening to iPod music via a FM transmitter.

Had no problem to get the stereo out of Demo mode - just look in the manual. Only knew that it would be in Demo mode as it is mentioned by previous reviewers. Wasn't too keen on the red lights on the dial and buttons, but was easily changed to green. The stereo came with a remote control - not sure about if it is a necessary item - haven't taken it out of the packaging yet - perhaps give it to back seat passengers to use. Overall, very pleased with this purchased and even more pleased that I managed to install it myself rather than pay someone to do it for me.

Bargain Sound!

Well I actually bought these thinking that they would be ok for someone that wanted better sound than original on a bargain and wow did I get just that!

These speakers were an absolute doddle to fit with all screws, attachments, etc were included which was a bonus.

After fitting I thought I would test them out and they are really good. I think if you wired these upto an amp the sound would be even better too!

I was going to get the 3-way Sont ones but had read that having so many 'Ways' in such a small speaker would destoy the sound somewhat.

I would definately recommend these to anyone on a budget!

Almost very good

Looks good, sounds good, however....

....interface to ipod is appalling. As noted in a previous review, why on earth did Sony not use the volume control to search through music library? One has to scroll up and down through artists using the +/- buttons and it loads the first song against each artist before moving on. Therefore pressing and holding the + (or -) button does not provide a fast scroll. I wanted to access Muse and it took over 5 mins to get there! Ok, so I could delete A-Ha, Abba, Adam and the Ants, and so on, but the whole point of an ipod is that it holds ALL your music, not just the stuff you are listening to at the moment.

Poor Poor Poor

When I got this item for Christmas I thought excellent just what I need, no more horrid things in my ear and I can also screen who calls whilst driving.... WRONG!!!!! It turned out to be the total opposite, more hassle than its worth. I used it once, paired it with my Samsung D900 nice and simple, made a call and it rang but when the call connected it disconnected this happened on my next 3 attempts then the call stayed connected. The speaker was so quiet I couldn't hear the person I was calling and they couldn't hear me, the same would happen when I received calls, it would connect and disconnect.

When I attempted to used the devise a second time it would not connect to my phone. I tried un-pairing and repairing but noting. I then paired it with my boyfriends Ericsson and guess what it worked, sound was still rubbish but no hassle when pairing, making or receiving calls and get this the caller Id displayed the names in the phone book, with my phone it just displayed numbers.

Anyway cut a long story short, took it back and got another one thinking it was just fault but nope it did the same too.

Now looking for another one.

This item is so over rated and a total let down.
