Excellent value

I purchased this item recently and am delighted wih the ease of use and quality of sound. It’s lightweight and good to look at too. I sing in a choir, and it’s perfect for recording rehearsals and reviewing performance between our practice nights.

Wonderful Product

i'm a 17 year old filipino student writer/filmmaker and when an idea pop into my mind, im always armed with a pen and paper to write my ideas and to review it later. there were also times when pen and paper are not appropriate, while in the bath, while sitting at the toilet, while walking, etc. so I decided to buy a voice recorder to record my ideas everywhere and anytime. I'm considering a digital voice recorder but it is out of my budget. microcassettes however are good and small in size but it cant be played in ordinary cassette players. i originally bought a cheap 375 pesos or about $6 Platinum cassette recorder but the microphone is so bad so i needed a replacement. im considering an aiwa model with Voice activated recording, 2x recording time and a tape counter for about 34 dollars but because of sony's clear voice recording, i got this tcm-200dv tape recorder for 36 dollars. i really love the cool features such as 2x recording time, speed control VOR or Voice activated Recording, Clear Voice system which filters sound to make it more audible and its design. the microphone in the aiwa model is positioned in the hood of the recorder which is very bad because you cant direct the microphone to the sound source you want; sony however, positioned it excellently in the body facing up so you can direct it easily to the sound source. the VOR also is nice but it needs a litte practice to use and is so sensitive. the only thing lacking in this product is a tape counter. the recording is excellent and you can use it on meetings and during class because the mic is sensitive enough to"hear" sounds from a distance. overall, i recommend this product for students and professionals. you will really deserve what you pay for.

Good value, great features, superb buy!

This is so simple to use, with 2gb memory I'll never fill it and to transfer to my PC it's a simple drag and drop process.

The carry case it comes with is an added bonus, and with quite an expensive piece of kit it's nice to know its not getting scratched in my pocket.

Last thing to mention, check out the dimensions - being about the size of a mobile phone, this is a far cry from the brick of a dictation machine is used to have.

This Sony dictation unit really is so easy to use comes complete with battery and USB cable - so ready to use out of the box.

Does the job, but not the best

I'm a journalist and I use this dictaphone for interviews. The benefits of this one if that it's very small and light, very portable. The batteries last for ages and it can carry loads of different tracks.
However - One really annoying feature is that when re-playing a recording, you can't rewind. This seems very strange and is VERY frustrating. You have to start the track all over again if you want to listen to a previous bit. Also, it's difficult to move the tracks onto a computer, you listen to them on the dictaphone.
The mic is fine for quiet places where you are quite close to the other person. However, in noiser places (I carried out interviews backstage, with several people and in bars) it becomes very difficult to hear what's going on. I'd reccomend buying an extra mic to plug into this.
All in all ., this is cute and it works and it's probably appropriate for some, but for the work I'm doing I'm upgrading to something a bit more powerful.

Fantastic

Great clear sound recording, AAA Battery life is good, Constructed well (not plastic), easy to use, smaller than it looks on the screen, light weight, stylish, ALL ROUND GREAT PRODUCT HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The 32MB built in Memory, is fine but if you're going to uses this constantly, invest in a 1GB memory stick duo.

Lives up to the SONY name

I was delighted when I opened the box, it's much smaller than the image shows.

Remove the cap at the bottom of the device and you find a USB 2 connection, this enables it to be connected directly to the USB port, from here it works like a USB flash drive, so you can use it to store and back up all your important files, it's also a MP3 player, great set of headphones supplied.

After a two weeks use i can't fault it - 5 star all the way!

great dictaphone

Okay if your like me and dont want second best this is for you this dictaphone boasts so much in such a small package. long battery life long recording times the microphone is really good more importantly allows you to add headphones and external microphone. the quality of recording is great and what more important you can back this up to your ps hassle free just use the software and usb provided. This is a great tool for catologing and backing up. If you have a tape dictaphone you will wonder how you ever used such a heavey beast.

OK - Not Slim-line, & Quite Noisy

Firstly, this is NOT Slim-line, but to be fair to Sony they don't describe it as such, that's in the Amazon heading. It's actually wider than my old Walkman because of the speaker.

I chose this over the plastic-cased models as I thought it would be more robust, & it's certainly 'nicer' than the plastic model I tried. However, a lot of background noise from the unit's motor comes out on the recordings, which is a bit surprising as the motor doesn't sound loud when you are actually recording.

It's OK, I've kept it, but it's disappointing - I expected much better from Sony & for the price.

Oh, & it takes AAA batteries, not AAs as described in some write-ups.

I found out you have the option to purchase a rechargeable AAA battery, (not supplied) the benefit here is that once connected to the USB port on your laptop, it charges the product directly.
